Intentional joy

This week, I gave a presentation to PFLAG Manhattan Beach/South Bay; they wanted to hear all about what's new at Parents of Trans Youth and "how I'm still standing in these unprecedented times."

At the top of my list is intentional joy.

For me, laughter and silliness are crucial, and I try not to take myself too seriously.

When watch TV, I choose funny shows to balance out the dystopian shows I watch with my husband. I'm currently enjoying Broad City 👇

We laugh a lot in the Parents of Trans Youth online community. I don’t want it to be a sad place and try to put a little humor in everything I do.

I find a lot of joy in reading (print or audiobooks), mostly fiction, and I really enjoy romances. They're a terrific escape with happy endings (which we could all use right about now).

I also started a gratitude practice. Every night before bed, I write down at least 3 things from that day that I’m celebrating, grateful for, or looking forward to. I’ve been doing this for about 2 months, and I honestly see the world differently! I notice joyful moments, savor them, and feel gratitude. For instance, I'm really invested in some bird drama in our backyard: two mockingbirds are guarding something in a tree, and the blue jays just keep trying to get in there, now a group of cardinals want in on the action.

Here's my challenge for you: be intentional about finding joy for one week. See if your outlook changes, and let me know how it goes!

Reader, everyone needs support at one time or another, especially if you're parenting transgender kiddos. Several organizations that I trust offer online support groups for parents and caregivers: Campaign for Southern Equality (Trans Youth Emergency Project) Hosted by mothasistahâ„¢ and YOURS TRULY, this is a monthly space for parents and caregivers of trans youth to gather in community, especially those who are navigating accessing gender-affirming care for their kids right now. Next group is...

This weekend, I jumped on the "This is who" trend on social media. Businesses have been posting childhood photos of themselves and/or their team members, captioned with "This is who [does a specific job task]". The trend is supposed to humanize brands and create a personal connection with their audiences. Looking back at these pictures made me think that I had NO idea I'd be doing what I am today, even as recently as a few years ago. I had no clue what being transgender meant when my first...
