Support saves lives

The Trevor Project's 2025 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People was released last week, and I always find helpful yet heartbreaking data in these annual findings. (Content warning: the survey addresses suicide risk and anti-LGBTQ+ victimization.)

I'm always interested to see how support makes a positive difference in the mental health of queer youth. This year's study found:

๐Ÿ“ LGBTQ+ young people who reported living in very accepting communities attempted suicide at nearly a third of the rate (6%) of those who reported living in very unaccepting communities (18%).

๐Ÿ“ LGBTQ+ young people who had access to spaces that supported their LGBTQ+ identity reported lower rates of attempting suicide compared to those who did not.

๐Ÿ“ LGBTQ+ young people reported the following top five actions as ways people in their life can best show their support and acceptance:

  • Trusting that I know who I am
  • Not supporting politicians that advocate for anti-LGBTQ+ legislation
  • Standing up for me
  • Respecting my pronouns
  • Showing support for how I express my gender

๐Ÿ“ Transgender and nonbinary young people reported lower rates of attempting suicide when the people they live with respected their pronouns.

Take action this Mental Health Awareness Month by looking through the survey data to familiarize yourself with the lived realities of LGBTQ+ young people and how you can support them.

You just might save a life.

The quote above was my answer to a question I was asked on Slate's Care & Feeding podcast last week: "What has been your biggest joy so far in your parenting career?โ€ The joy in seeing your kid light up when you really see them and affirm who they are is almost indescribable. That affirmation can be anything from using their chosen name to taking them to get a new haircut to helping advocate for them at school. You will see their joy, and you will know that their identity - who they are...

Come be with people who just get it. Reader, I talk to so many parents of trans kids who crave being in a safe space where you donโ€™t have to explain everything about your kid. Where folks understand what youโ€™re going through and what your kid is going through. And thatโ€™s other parents of trans kids. They just get it. But those spaces can be really hard to find. So weโ€™ve made it easy for you! The Parents of Trans Youth Community (PTYC) is a secure, online space for affirming parents and...
