Resource spotlight: TransFamily Support Services

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting with a staff member from TransFamily Support Services, and WOWZA! This is an incredible organization.

From their website:

TransFamily Support Services guide transgender/non-binary youth and their families through the gender transitioning process to help make it the most positive experience possible. We provide family coaching, assistance with healthcare and insurance issues, help navigating the legal system, and support at schools. All services are provided at no fee.

Here's a peek at what they offer:

  • LGBTQ+ youth virtual community spaces: middle school, high school, young adult
  • Family virtual groups: parents of teens/pre-teens, parents of "littles," parents of young adults, dual spectrum parent group (autistic and trans/nonbinary), Latine/x bilingual group, Southern states group, and coming soon: grandparents and partners
  • San Diego area in-person events: family gatherings, play group
  • Gender Junk program - providing binders / gaffs / packers / bras / stand-to-pee devices / makeup and other gender-affirming items free to youth
  • Insurance assistance (!)
  • Mentorship for trans youth
  • Training and education, speakers
  • and more!

Debi Jackson is the OG mom-of-a-trans-child advocate. She is the real deal, and I trust her implicitly. Her family recently moved out of the country for safety, and she's sharing her immigration knowledge in an upcoming webinar that looks fantastic.

Texas's bathroom bill (SB 8) went into effect yesterday. Yuck is an understatement. There is no reason why transgender people shouldn’t use the bathroom where they’re the most comfortable. They go to the bathroom for human biological imperatives, just like everyone else. It’s just not a big deal. (Plus the bill is just very poorly written. I just heard an ACLU lawyer call it "legal mumbo jumbo.") These kind of bills, laws, and policies obviously target transgender and gender nonconforming...
