Finding hope

I truly believe this with all my heart.

Harvey Milk was one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States. He was an outspoken leader who believed that hope is essential in the fight for justice.

In a recent media interview, a journalist asked me if I thought things could get any worse for trans kids and the trans community.

Well, yeah. It could always be worse.

But I have to have hope that things will get better.

Hope is what gets me out of bed each morning.

Hope is what drags me to the Texas Capitol to fight for trans kids again and again and again.

I find hope in community. The stunningly beautiful trans community that has welcomed me with open arms. The community of parents of trans kids whose shared lived experiences are a lifeline for so many.

And I find hope in trans youth. A transgender kid who is self-actualized and living their truth out loud is a glimpse into a better future.

A gift.

So thank you, Harvey Milk, for teaching us to speak up with hopeful voices and never to be silent.

If you are speaking up publicly, you might consider protecting your personal information online to avoid harassment and doxxing.

One way of doing that is by using an opt-out service to remove your personal information from data brokers. Details like your name, address, age, phone number, email address, and photos of your home are flushed and disappear from search results, but your business info stays intact.

I use and love DeleteMe.

Try it for yourself! Google "Mandy Giles" and see what comes up. (you'll also find Mandy Giles the actress, Mandy Giles the university academic officer, Mandy Giles the accountant, and Mandy Giles the musician. None of them are me.)

And hey - I’ve got a DeleteMe 20% discount code for you! Click the button below to sign up with the discount.

I told her that an ally is someone from a non-marginalized group who uses their privilege to advocate for a marginalized group. They transfer the benefits of their privilege to those who lack it. She said, Oh, I’m an ally!” and gave an example of helping people in a different...
