Find the joy!

I know these are scary and overwhelming times right now - for our trans loved ones and for us.

So I have a challenge for you, Reader ... FIND THE JOY.

Joy is what keeps us going and gives us hope.

Find the joy in your community, whether that's other parents of trans kids (who just GET IT), the trans community, or the larger LGBTQ+ community (or all of the above!).

Find the joy in little things, like a beautiful spring day or the perfect buttermilk biscuit (my eternal quest).

Most importantly, find the joy in your kid. Supporting and affirming your kid's gender identity will have a huge positive impact on their mental health. Which will bring them joy. Which will bring you joy. It's just one big circle of joy!

Where are you finding joy these days?

But parents I serve are asking for comfort and guidance. They're scared, and so are their children. I'm not sure I have answers, but I can offer some ways of thinking about this moment: Safe harborFor parents, be sure to let your children know that you have their back and that they will always be safe at home. There’s no one right way to be transgender, nonbinary, or gender-expansive, and your child’s path is exactly the right one for them. So when deciding what steps to take next, follow their lead. Because ultimately, this is their journey, not ours. One parent described it this way: if your kid is the CEO of their gender identity, the parent is the executive assistant. Your kid is making the decisions about who they are, what direction they're going, and at what pace. We can help them get there....
