We all make mistakes🤷‍♂️

A recent conversation thread in the Parents of Trans Youth Community asked: "What do you wish you knew when your transgender kid first came out to you?"

Hindsight is always 20/20. Members' missteps came mostly from their lack of information or not yet finding the support of community.

But we all do the best we can with the information we have at the time.

We can't go back in time, but it's ok to acknowledge your mistakes and even apologize to your kid: "Hey, I said X to you that one time, and I'm really sorry about that. I know that wasn't the right thing to say."

Or you can take what you've learned from other parents and use that going forward, so you can strengthen your relationship with your kid.

The important thing is to learn from your mistakes and do better in the future.

The Family Acceptance Project (FAP) is providing a new evidence-based online family support program to help parents and caregivers to increase acceptance and support for LGBTQ+ youth.

This is the first online program that works with LGBTQ youth and families together to increase family acceptance and support and to decrease health risks, including suicide, substance abuse, and risk for HIV.

This online program is for LGBTQ+ youth, ages 14-20, and their parent or caregiver, including Black, Asian/ Pacific Islander, Latino, Indigenous, and multiracial LGBTQ youth and caregivers.

Youth and caregivers will receive family guidance, education, and skills building from the FAP team as well as peer support from other youth, caregivers, and families of color.

Youth and caregivers will be paid for their time to participate in the program and will help develop services that FAP will make available to the community.

I thought he was with the organizers, and he asked good and informed questions about how Texas trans kids can access health care. Everything I said in the interview was public knowledge, and I’m always pretty careful about how I talk about gender-affirming care for adolescents. AND - I woke up the next morning to find that this guy was actually a reporter from a Texas right-wing media...
