TDOR reflections🕯️🏳️‍⚧️

Last night, I attended the Transgender Day of Remembrance event in Katy, Texas, hosted by Katy Pride to memorialize the trans siblings we've lost in the past year to anti-trans violence.

We gathered under a park pavilion to hear a handful of people speak somberly of the losses rooted in systemic transphobia and injustice. But we also heard words of hope celebrating the trans experience and embracing the support of community.

Across Texas and across the country – we are seeing laws, orders, and directives that target transgender individuals, including children, taking away their rights, access, and opportunities. The people who wish harm on our trans loved ones act out of ignorance and fear, clinging to the status quo.

But someone else having rights, enjoying life, and just existing as themselves doesn’t diminish anyone else’s rights. Everyone should have the freedom and safety to be themselves, and transgender folks, including kids, are no different.

Afterwards, we moved to the park lake by the light of electric candles to hear the names of the lost read aloud. More than 300 souls around the world. There were so many names that ten people were needed to read them all. My foot fell asleep.

TDOR is not only a memorial service; it's a call to action to make a better world for transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive folks.

And we can do that every day.

From our partners at Lambda Legal and ACLU: WHAT: On January 13, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in two cases that will shape the future of transgender and nonbinary youth and people in this country: West Virginia v. BPJ and Little v. Hecox. These two cases represent two teenage girls from West Virginia and Idaho, who sued just to be allowed to continue playing sports like any other student. And we are united as a Team for them! WHEN AND WHERE: On Tuesday, Jan. 13 in...

Reader, I talk to so many parents of trans kids who crave being in a space where you don’t have to explain everything about your kid. Where folks understand what you’re going through and what your kid is going through. And that’s other parents and caregivers of trans kids. They just get it. But those spaces can be really hard to find. It's hard to know who to trust. So we’ve made it easy for you! The Parents of Trans Youth Community (PTYC) is a secure, online space for parents/caregivers who...

Want a concrete action you can take to support help trans youth in the U.S.? I got you. Two proposed federal rules would make it much harder for trans youth to access medically necessary care. These rules would: 1. Block Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming care for trans patients under 18, and block CHIP coverage for trans patients under 19. 2. Threaten hospitals’ participation in Medicare/Medicaid if they provide gender-affirming care to youth, which would put tremendous pressure on them...
