She's The He

I saw the movie “She’s The He” this week, and when it was over, I immediately wanted to see it again.

It’s a teen satire about two seniors who pretend to be transgender during their last week of high school (a crush on a girl is involved). Hijinks ensue.

AND one of them finds out that she actually is trans.

The friend I saw it with is also the parent of a trans young adult, and we laughed til we cried, probably because we’re Gen X and appreciated this 80s- and 90s-style teen romp. But also, so much of this movie is real, raw, and heartbreaking. We went through all the kleenex I had in my purse.

One reason for the crying was because the mother of the trans teen does not react well at first when the teen comes out to her. She even tells her child that she makes a good-looking boy but an ugly girl. Ouch.

Later, the mom explains to another character why she has that reaction. It's because she’s scared for her kid; she knows that being trans is a burden and doesn’t want her kid to carry that.

I talk to so many parents who hesitate to accept or embrace their transgender or nonbinary child because they want their kids to have an easy life and to be happy and safe. They’re terrified that none of that will happen if their child lives authentically.

But here's the good news: that's all possible. Yes, the world is on fire when it comes to trans issues, but there are also tons of trans folks out there just livin' their lives. Going to the grocery store. Being bored at their jobs. Laughing with friends. Falling in love. And that's all possible for trans kids.

“She’s The He” has an almost entirely trans and queer cast and crew and has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. It's light hearted, pee-your-pants hilarious, and playing in limited runs in theaters all over the country, hopefully in your city soon.

The more tickets that are sold, the better chance the movie has of getting on a stronger streaming platform so we can all see it on demand.

GO SEE THIS MOVIE!

She is the second transgender woman to be murdered this year in Houston; the first woman’s name is Jade Roberts. I am devastated, angry, and heartbroken - not only from thinking about my transgender friends, but also thinking about my transgender children, and how Persia’s family was treated so horribly by the Houston...
