Find the joy!

Reader, it seems like every time I turn around, I hear another depressing news story about transphobic crap - new policies, proposed laws, or people just generally being jerks.

So I have a challenge for you ... FIND THE JOY.

Joy is what keeps us going and gives us hope.

Find the joy in your community, whether that's other parents of trans kids (who just GET IT), the trans community, or the larger LGBTQ+ community (or all of the above!).

Find the joy in little things, like GOOD news about trans folks (try here or here) or the perfect buttermilk biscuit (my eternal quest).

Most importantly, find the joy in your kid. Supporting and affirming your kid's gender identity will have a huge positive impact on their mental health. Which will bring them joy. Which will bring you joy. It's just one big circle of joy!

Where are you finding joy these days?

For many parents of trans kids, understanding all the “gender stuff” is hard. Gender identity. Pronouns. Gender expression. Transitioning. It’s a lot. I get it. I've been there. But you don’t have to understand everything to be supportive. Understanding comes with learning, talking with your kid, connecting with other parents, and time. And you might never fully understand your transgender child’s journey, because it’s their journey, not yours. And that's OK. Just keep on loving, supporting,...

So many great organizations offer financial aid and direct support to trans folks in need of health and wellness care. Several offer special grants and services for minors; check websites to determine eligibility. Point of Pride - Free chest binders and femme shapewear for all ages; Electrolysis Support Fund; Trans Surgery Fund and HRT Access Fund for 18+ Note: Point of Pride's Thrive Fund covers stuff like: document fees, voice therapy, wigs, prosthetics, waxing, and reproductive health...

It seems like every day, there's a new policy or report or news item that seeks to invalidate trans kids and restrict their access to stuff other kids take for granted: health care, sports teams, seeing themselves in books and classroom instruction, or having their name and identity respected at school. For parents of trans children, all that noise can be scary. When you hear those loud voices, those squeaky wheels – all that misinformation and hateful language can really mess with your head....
